The Auction 2021

Terrence Higgins Trust are delighted to welcome you to The Auction 2021. The Auction is a night of luxury items, unique and fabulous experiences and art from many incredible artists.

The event to date has raised over £4.9 million, vital funds that allow us to deliver our mission and support people living with and affected by HIV. As the impact of COVID-19 continues to affect us all, we need these funds more than ever to keep our life-changing services going.

The Auction 2021 includes over 60 contemporary artworks and experiences curated by the THT Auction Committee and donated by incredible community of patrons and supporters.

The donated items are spread across two auctions and a ‘buy now’ selection of editioned objects.

3. Conrad Shawcross

Study for Truncation Sequence
Sculpture, 30 x 30 x 30 cm.

Estimate:£4,000 - 6,000

Study for Truncation Sequence continues Shawcross’ exploration of the complex properties of the tetrahedron.

Made of black painted steel, it is a study of the same interlocking cells that comprise the system for The Dappled Light of the Sun – the monumental first work within Shawcross’ Formations series.

There are currently 105,200 people living with HIV in the UK, of them 6,600 are currently undiagnosed, so do not know they are HIV positive.

5. Tai Shan Schierenberg

Painting, 64 x 84 cm.

Tai Shan Schierenberg graduated from the Slade School of Art in 1987 and in 1989 won first prize in the National Portrait Gallery's John Player Portrait Award.

John Stark’s alcove paintings invite us into an illusory medieval world, laden with symbolic and mythological allusions. Subtle anachronisms upset our notions of time as we peer out through the frame, Stark’s medieval fortress window. Bony Tony is an alcove painting following in the tradition of memento mori.

Pakistan: Section 377

Pakistan: Section 377 was made for the 2020/2021 exhibition Losing Venus at the Pitt Rivers Museum in Oxford. The exhibition explores the links between British colonial expansion and the implementation of British homophobic legislation in colonised countries.

New diagnoses are now declining and have been since their peak in 2005. In 2019, we saw a 10% drop in new diagnoses from 2018. This is a clear win for us in the mission to ending HIV transmission in the UK, however, of those diagnosed with HIV in 2019, 42% were diagnosed late.

2. Alix de Bretagne

In this readymade, conceptual artist Alix de Bretagne contemplates on the impact of PReP in the fight against HIV. We can observe this piece and see it for what it is: a blue pill in a frame.

It is not just a pill. It represents the unfulfilled hope of so many we have lost in the fight against HIV since the pandemic started; it represents the hope in the eyes of those left to carry on with the fight; it represents the hope in the veins of countless family and friends who have marched alongside our community; it represents the hope in the soul of all of us who are moved to action. It’s not just a blue pill: it is hope.

I'm honoured to work once again alongside The Terrence Higgins Trust and participate in this year's auction. Many people understand the importance behind raising awareness on HIV transmission but not many know how to get involved…but through this event, I am able to show my support for all the great work they do.

As the UK’s leading HIV and sexual health charity, we’ve been looking to the future with real hope that we can end new transmissions of HIV in the UK by 2030.

We recently launched the first independent HIV Commission in the UK alongside Elton John AIDS Foundation and National AIDS Trust to advise the government on how to achieve this ambitious goal.

Together we can support people living with HIV to lead happy healthy lives, eradicate HIV stigma, look to a future free from HIV transmissions and ensure good sexual health for all.

Together we can create a better future and generous support from our supporters like you help us drive this forward.

Together we can make changes that last a lifetime and end HIV transmissions in the UK by 2030.
