Your Heart to a Dog to tear
05 DECEMBER 2022 - 15 DECEMBER 2022Notes
Blurred between memories and reveries, the paintings and illustrations that Miguel Solans (Zaragoza, Spain, 1990) creates, transport the spectator to a liminal space in which veracity gives way to an intimate and emotional reality of ambiguous autobiographic images.
Starting off drawing as a child, Miguel develops firstly an interest in illustration, at the same time he starts being influenced by Skater culture, in both a musical and cinematographical, and humanistic level.
Impregnating his work with heavily textured surfaces, he mantains an analogue process of work, parting from drawing and the register of the pen itself on the surface of the piece, and focusing on bright vibrant colours, who become a subject of his work as recurrent as any other. Horses, flowers and portraits are framed indistinctively, in compositions that toy with centrality and inclination to create an illusory game of perspective, layers of depth and psycological complexity. In 2019, Miguel moves to Barcelona and starts focusing on painting, a media that allows for a higher grade of sincerity and introspection, in which memory and somnolence turn into the source of imagery, birthing bent and suspended characters, bathed in colour atmospheres from scenes that resemble non finished sentences, mumbled in the last second before waking up from a dream. This visceral and surrealist synergy melts linear time, intoxicating the spectator with a synaesthetic nostalgia that turns the personal into the universal, allowing for instant connection with the artist’s pictoric register.
Solans graduated in Illustration at the Escuela de Arte de Zaragoza in 2017.
Ever since, he has exhibited his work in a series of solo shows, “Boys Don´t Cry” (Zaragoza, 2018) and “Mudanza” in Antonia Puyó Gallery (Zaragoza, 2021) and group shows such as “LA CASA POR LA VENTANA. HISTORIAS PARA ABRAZAR LA CIUDAD” (2020) or fairs like “JUSTFAIRS” (Madrid,2022). His pictorial work has been comissioned by the Hotel Inside by Melia (Zaragoza, 2020), The Hoxton Hotel, (Los Angeles, 2022) and the Palacio de la Infanta in Zaragoza, sponsored by Ibercaja´s young artists prize (2019). His work as an illustrator has been comissioned by multiple clients such as La Harinera cultural centre, or Cebrián; and music bands such as Rosin de Palo or Depresión Sonora. He has created promotional posters for events and venues of the likes of Sala El Sol.
