Isolated Selves was conceived and painted during lockdown. I had been about to exhibit in the Chaiya Art Awards shortlist exhibition, when lockdown descended. The exhibition had to be postponed, but in the meantime I was invited to conceive a work for an online show hosted by Chaiya, 'Impact', on the theme of Covid. This painting was the result. I wanted to express the way in which lockdown was, for many a folding in on oneself, a time of introspection. The reiterated central figure is trapped within himself, yet fragmented and decentralised. In this painting, I look at how we depend on others for our sense of self and our sense of identity, and how being cut off from the world of others we can become disoriented to the point of disintegration.

Isolated Selves was selected for The Wilderness Project, an exhibition themed on the lockdown at The Crypt Gallery, Euston Rd.

Notes

As a figurative artist, I seek to explore the human condition. Often my subjects are caught in the act of self-confrontation in situations which are disconcerting or improbable. However, these figures are not symbols, but highly detailed representations of real people, with real emotions and experiences.

I work in oil on canvas, densely layering the paint to create an effect realistic at a distance, yet richly textured in proximity. In this way, I aim to portray an intensely physical and intimate rendition of the subject's 'moment'.
