Foundry cast Bronze. Ltd edition no 2. of 12.

Entwinned depicts the forms of two female figures floating in an underwater embrace. Inspired by a deep connection with the ocean and wild swimming, this piece was created in response to the essential human need for connection with another being. It is an exploration of intimacy, both physical and emotional. Conveying a sense of abiding calm in the moment of embrace. Clinging limbs seeming to float together in the current, hair twisted in the pull of the tide. It is an intense pose, as if the women are holding on for dear life and yet simultaneously it is a beautiful moment of surrender to one-another.

Carved originally in black foundry wax, a medium that itself can be precariously susceptible to temperature changes. However, it is one that I prefer to use as it takes on my fingerprints and tool marks, whilst allowing me the freedom to manipulate the figures positioning until the angles and contours are balanced. The soft wax also allows me to create a highly textured, undulating surfaces that are hard to appreciate prior to the bronze casting stage but that reveal themselves in all their beauty once the patina is applied.

This piece is the first of a new collection of figurative sculptures that will be available later in the year. They are an exploration our essential human desire to connect within the safety of an ‘embrace’.  The figures each piece are caught in motion, swimming together, almost floating in mid-air or caught in a whirl of water, suspended perfectly together in the moment wrapped up in each-other and oblivious to all else.

The sculpture is cast in foundry bronze and is no. 2 in a limited edition of 12.

Notes

As a specialist in portraiture and figurative sculpture my practice revolves around the desires and needs that drive all human experience.

I am fascinated by the constant state of emotional and physical flux we inhabit every day. We search for true intimacy and connectedness and yet there can be a juxtaposition of such riotous joyfulness, resounding isolation and loss to endure.

I aim to communicate through my work my experience as a woman, mother, lover and try to unpick the connections I find myself seeking. Sourcing inspiration for all of my sculptural practice from the moments of tenderness I have witnessed and experienced in my life. Essentially I am a story teller.

Inspired by my own experiences living with Hypermobile Ehlers Danlos Syndrome in a fragile body, my work often seaks to elicit the viewers empathy and tenderness. I invite them to connect with their own place in the world, to draw their attention to the innate value of human interaction, our basic need to reach out and touch.
