The Top 100 - Timed Auction
31 MAY 2021 - 24 JUNE 2021Notes
“I use painting to test the pressures felt by figures in space - and to attempt to provide them with some relief: a soft cushion, an open window, a staircase, a stranger's hand... Each of my paintings contains a moment of intimacy. I’m drawn to the ways in which our relationships with others and the environments we inhabit can blur the boundaries that delineate the self. Working from my own staged photographs, I apply thin washes and translucent layers of oil paint, often combining these with flat, blank areas rendered in tinted varnish or house paint - creating strange, quasi-domestic settings. I’m interested in the tension that occurs through these different applications of paint - depicting interactions and environments that are, too, fragmentary and shifting.” - Mary Macken Allen, 2021
