Notes
London-based artist Alice Sheridan, creates dynamic planes of colour and texture in her abstract paintings. Bold and singular marks intersect swathes of paint, while the rapid brush-marks reflect the speed and energy of application.
Titled We Cannot Cage the Minute implies both boundless time and immediacy. We take in large fields of colour (patches of deep, inky blues) whilst concentrating on the minutia (sharp darts of orange that flit across the panel).
Explaining her method Alice says, "I work on a series of paintings at the same time and begin with no end point in mind which allows each painting to develop its own unique history. Working on wooden panels gives a resistance for drawn marks bringing the freedom of my sketchbook work. As layers build, this tougher base allows me to sand and scrape back revealing previous colours and this keeps a sense of surprise and spontaneity in the finished painting."
Accolades
Alice Sheridan trained as a graphic designer. For the last 10 years she has focused solely on painting in her London studio. Her paintings are held in private collections from the US to Australia, and are a hot favourite of interior designers such as Zoffany and Harlequin.
