Notes
A country lane in Somerset is the subject of this painting from Michael Cox.
Dappled summer light spills across a road whose texture is accentuated by the un-primed canvas that represents it. This work continues a series of paintings by Michael that depict lazy afternoons in anonymous villages and towns across England.
Born in Somerset but now living in London, Michael draws a sense of nostalgia and homelessness from non-descript countryside scenes. A service station, a view from the motorway, a winding road or even a grass verge of a suburbia housing estate evoke a connection to his former life. Mundane moments, but their lack of presence in London makes them noble and longed for.
Michael Cox studied at Falmouth School of Art (2016).
He is work has been exhibited in numerous solo and group exhibitions across the UK, including: ASC Gallery, Unit London, Bloomberg New Contemporaries at the ICA, Art Represent, The Bluecoat in Liverpool, Falmouth Fine Art London, Underdog Gallery, Peninsula Arts Gallery, Trinity Buoy Wharf, Millennium Gallery. As well as being including in private collections across Germany, Italy, Spain and the UK
Michael was Shortlisted for the John Ruskin Art Prize in 2014. His work has been publicised in So Young Magazine, It's Nice That - Printed Pages, Boooom, Salone del Mobile, Architects' Journal, New Contemporaries and Evolver.
