Notes
Still Breathing So Can't Complain - an expression overheard and repurposed for the title of this work, is a sentiment that is purposefully at odds with the joyful and exuberant colours of this painting. Peter Evans' work is often this - a dropped receipt, a throw away comment, the ephemeral detritus of everyday life transformed into something painterly and poetic.
For the artist, routine behaviour and social interactions are a place of discovery. Peter describes the everyday as "gifting material to be noted down, reconstructed and presented anew for interpretation". His work is based on a "fascination with the routine of our daily lives and the unremarkable". It is in this work that Peter wants to address the big questions: who are we and how do we relate to one another?
