Notes

This painting shows a dramatic view of the 300 meter sandstone cliff that juts off the coast of Foula, one of the most remote permanently inhabited islands in the UK.

Architect and artist Ian McChesney has captured the angular splendour of Nebbifield as it is lit by the early afternoon sun giving the painting its luminescence.

Only 3 miles in width at its widest point, Foula has a population of 30 and is remarkable for its deeply held Norse traditions and its abundance of spectacular wildlife and flower species.

Ian is best known for his public sculptures but drawing and painting occur in parallel. His recent work is inspired by expeditions to rugged places which have led to a series of painterly semi-abstract paintings.

Accolades
Ian McChesney studied at Kingston University and the Royal College of Art. His work has been commissioned by the UK’s most prominent landowners, architects, local authorities and developers. These include Argent, Derwent London, The Crown Estate, King’s Cross Partnership and the University of Plymouth.
