Notes

Anna MacDonald's minimalist abstract artworks explore the power of negative space and the Zen philosophy of Ma - an idea that looks at the consciousness between two spaces.

The starting point for Anna's work is always an observation of nature or a memory. These are stripped back using visual elements to leave only the essence of the original observation.

The gestural marks reveal influences of Abstract Expressionism, graphic design and Japanese aesthetics, each mark symbolising the flux of energies.

For the artist, "Observing shadows acts as a kind of meditation. The contemplation of variation in tone feels like a visual form of breathing. It is this sense of tranquillity interspersed with surges of energy that I aim to convey in my work."
