Notes

Through multiple print processes and hand drawn details, Paul Wardski creates fictitious interiors within an imagined landscape. This is one of the three pieces that was selected and one won the Clifford Chance Printmaking Purchase Prize in 2018.

The lightness of photolithography put through an etching press creates a ghost-like quality suggesting what is past. In contrast, the heavy graphic quality of screen-printing allows the artist to insert and overlay bold objects as motifs which take on a decorative nature.

Paul distorts scale and places unusual, surreal like objects within a weightless realm to create works that, for the artist, evoke a sense of loss and abandonment.

Paul explains, "My work is a reflection upon past experience coupled with social-political issues, primarily the displacement of people through the regeneration of social housing and urban development. I engage with sites of contradiction that are local to me, and within those sites I search for objects that have been left behind by past inhabitants."
