Notes
Korean artist Sooyoung Chung imagines writing a letter to her grandfather in this work; depicting objects that describe her own surroundings and the feelings of missing a family member who has passed away.
Recognisable objects and paraphernalia litter a dreamscape that feels both familiar and stark. Whilst these objects reflect the artist's experiences, a kind of biography in possessions, they also speak to our collective memory of popular culture and every day existence
Sooyoung Chung sees “Everyday space as the intersection of personal mythology and collective identity. A space contains intimate details about personal taste and can therefore allude to a person being in it without his or her existence. It reflects the identity of the community which they belong to. So painting a space filled with someone’s autobiographical objects is like a portrait of him or her and also a community."
