Notes

Moon Over The Tay captures Port Allen's reed beds at dusk on the banks of the River Tay in Scotland.

Knowing the river since childhood, Calum McClure has chosen to paint the reed beds which are harvested for thatched roofs across the country. This is part of the artists ongoing series of nocturnes and responses to the river Tay.

Calum immerses himself in the landscape and in the artistic process of representing it. He believes paint can "convey the poetry of suggestion". Drawing on the great history of nocturnes, a term first coined by James Abbot McNeil Whistler, Calum's work depicts the magical hour where the veil of night covers the land and the mysticism of night time emerges.

Calum says he "dreams as he sees", aiming to transport viewers to a similar place of quiet consideration tinged with the excitement of the extraordinary.

His lyrical, beautiful paintings often hover between abstraction and representation and are a celebration of the precious natural environment.

Olha Stepanian's photography draws on the aesthetic of fashion photography and of Dada and Surrealist photography, like that of Man Ray and Claude Cahun. Her crisp black and white work are striking in their simplicity and bold in their composition and overall design. This comes from a process of sketching out her ideas before a photoshot.   “Every photograph is a separate story. I look for props and costumes among friends, though it’s easy to find clothes in thrift shops and alter them to fit the model (here my seamstress training comes in handy). I love details, and it is these details that sometimes give birth to an interesting storyline."
