Notes
A response to time spent in the Lake District, Tessa Haughton mixes cold wax medium and marble dust into her pigment to create a soft, textured surface which captures the light as the landscape itself does.
Tessa Haughton prefers to draw on the power of suggestion in her paintings, rather than carefully delineating a specific place. Often abstracted by weather conditions, her landscapes speak the language of both abstraction and figuration.
Tess sites impulsive and gestural mark making as key to this process but she is careful to explain that this is tempered with controlled brush strokes. Tess explains that, "The painting process is balanced by observation and intuition. Surfaces are scratched into and paint layered on, then scraped away to hide or reveal what is underneath."
