Notes

Rebecca Holloway considers the moment when a dog is left alone, and she is struck by their tenderness and need for comfort.

She has chosen to depict the dog at the focal point of this painting with the rest of the elements falling into place around the dog. Rebecca finds dogs are often secondary to human presence, so here she paints the dog as the central focus, the main character in this story.

Rebecca is interested in human relationships to plants, animals and the wilderness of nature. She paints the spaces that we give to plants and animals and considers how we contort our lives and surroundings to include living creatures or plants.

She notes how we often sanitise, restrict, or strip away the essential elements of nature of other living things to accommodate our human habit. She seeks to bring back a sense of 'otherness' in her paintings which she feels is lost by human intervention.

Olha Stepanian's photography draws on the aesthetic of fashion photography and of Dada and Surrealist photography, like that of Man Ray and Claude Cahun. Her crisp black and white work are striking in their simplicity and bold in their composition and overall design. This comes from a process of sketching out her ideas before a photoshot.   “Every photograph is a separate story. I look for props and costumes among friends, though it’s easy to find clothes in thrift shops and alter them to fit the model (here my seamstress training comes in handy). I love details, and it is these details that sometimes give birth to an interesting storyline."
