Notes
^NT <> NWO^ appears to be an encrypted title; it stands for (Nice Try / No Way Out), and reflects South London-based painter Charley Peters' way of working that brings together the digital realm with the lived, human experience.
Charley pushes the spatial potential of painted surfaces. She applies subtle variations in colour, tone and scale to construct illusionary light and structural depth.
Starting from an interest in hard-edged abstract artwork, her work considers how painting has evolved in the context of contemporary media. Through smartphones and tablets, today's society experience thousands of 'flat' images, in quick succession every day, that lack texture and material.
To explore the material nature of paint in this image-hungry world, Charley applies layer upon layer of paint to her works. Gently building up and juxtaposing the different colours, she explores the disrupted relationship of pictorial composition with our experiences of reading space, material and abstract form in the post-digital image world.
