Fairytale

Fairytale, 120x150x4cm, Oil on canvas, 2017

Part of the post-apocalypse series, these paintings are built up of collages of places. The autonomy of paint underpins the process, a loss of control in the world causing a slippage from familiar into the unfamiliar. Brisland will collect images of places real, imagined, from magazines and postcards or documented from journeys made around the globe. From these, drawings and collages are played with until a composition feels right. The paintings often require another series of drawings to re-think the process. Painting rapidly in parts and slowing in others to focused detail, the paintings are fragmented remnants of actions and reactions. Brisland thinks of this as a conversation that happens between herself and the paint. as if the paint had individual autonomy. Without it, the painting is not working. In all of the isolation and desertion present in the light and space, the paint is the thing which is alive.

This series is ongoing and constantly altering. Almost a Fairytale was recently included in the solo exhibition ‘Humdrum Apocalypse’

The painting has been stored in a clean, dry area and is in excellent condition.
