David Murphy’s work encompasses paintings, drawings and sculpture. Diverse in materials – leaded handblown glass, manipulated steel tubes, hand-beaten aluminium, casein paint on gesso – and diverse in scale, it would seem that there is an ambiguity to the work, an unpredictability to a practice straddling so much. But David’s sculptures are – in his own words – ‘scribbles in space’, and his drawings and paintings are sculptural investigations, considering depth, form and visual illusion. It is not necessary to delineate between them. His fluid movement between 2D and 3D, across materials and boundaries, is all part of the same investigation - an enquiry into material properties, form and the energy of matter.
David’s interest in both the natural world and man-made forms come across very clearly in his considered choice of materials. Each material has a history, a provenance, and through this can add layered meaning to the work. - Jo Baring
