"The title refers to the number of lines that were required to make it – each line is scored by hand using an etching needle directly into the aluminium." - Ben Gooding, 2021
Gooding's work has largely been grounded in a systems based drawing practice that explores how a structure or composition can be generated from the methodical repetition of a linear form. One of the central concerns of his practice is the phenomenological nature of line. It is bound within the first act of any creative endeavour and in that kinetic instant between point and line an infinite range of possibilities collapse into a discreet, actualised form.
Through a process of superimposition and iteration using simple mathematical and geometric devices, this linear form will start to generate a complex structure or movement that is determined by a set of decisions made prior to the actual production of the work. These are effectively self-generating compositions that follow a program.
Although these works may first appear mechanically produced, they are in fact laboriously hand-crafted and on closer inspection one may discern tiny errors and imperfections that attest to this. And although they are technically ""drawn"" things, they occupy a space between drawing and sculpture, often possessing an object quality.
