Notes
Helen Barff’s explores autobiographical memory, allowing the tactile juxtaposition of materials to tell the stories. Helen was interested in the use of fans as a communication tool in historical Japan; for example sometimes containing announcements, a letter, a prayer or even a weapon. Her fan is clad in lead, so as well as communicating a poisonous material, the dead weight renders the lightweight fan redundant – the breeze is gone. This fan’s message could be seen as an environmental warning.
