More Heed - Timed Auction
31 AUGUST 2021 - 15 SEPTEMBER 2021Notes
This painting was made during the lockdown from a still taken from ‘The Cabinet of Dr Caligari'. The figure has been repurposed as an embodiment of sadness and abandonment.
Ben Westley Clarke studied at Byam Shaw School of Art, The Slade School of Fine Art, and the New York Studio School, before joining The Drawing Year. Ben has made paintings documenting a working-class Irish pub in Somers Town, with its regular characters and unpredictable goings on. During the last 3 years, Ben has worked from found source material whilst living in Madrid, after receiving the Richard Ford Award to draw in the Prado Museum . His interest in social communion and interaction has led him to explore the carnivalesque and the festive: he seeks a Rabelaisian image of modern life.
