Nick Albertson (United States, b. 1983), Straws Study 1, 2022
Nick Albertson works with notions of abstraction and representation at once by turning very recognizable objects (such as plastic strays seen in this image) into poetic gestures of color, line, and form. For this print he uses the cyanotype process, which requires him to embrace a level of chance as he creates his compositions entirely in the dark before exposing the light sensitive paper. He writes: “Photography is most often used as a tool to make sense of what is in front of the camera, but I am interested in how it has the ability to complicate, compress, and defamiliarize it.”
Nick Albertson completed his BA at Bard College and his MFA at Columbia College Chicago (2013). His work has been exhibited extensively in Chicago, as well as at the Pingyao International Photo Festival, China (2011, 2012); the Center for Photography at Woodstock, NY (2014); and the SFO Museum, CA (2018) among others. He is represented by ENGAGE Projects.
