Notes
Jay Wolke (United States, b. 1954), CompCan_0308, 2017
Known for his acute eye for color, Jay Wolke has worked for many decades to create images that show the interplay between the built environment and forms in the natural landscape, and how these landscapes are shaped to suit human needs and desires. This image, made in a marble quarry in Italy, is part of his Big Boast Little Pond series, which the artist states is: “concerned with the disparities between design and consumption; the often-dissonant stratifications of ambition and power that dominate the built environment.”
Jay Wolke is a recipient of several grants, including the Illinois Arts Council Grant (1985-1986, 1990-1991, 2005-2006) and the National Endowment/Midwest Arts Alliance Grant (1995-1996). He has exhibited in Italy, Canada, and the United States. His work is held in many collections, including the Museum of Modern Art, NY; the Whitney Museum of American Art; the Art Institute of Chicago; the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, among many others. Wolke is Professor of Photography at Columbia College Chicago.
