Sonja Thomsen (United States, b. 1978), Nexus (53)
Sonja Thomsen utilizes photography, handmade books, sculpture, and installation to animate the link between the known and the unknowable. As an artist mother trained in the sciences, Thomsen works in abstraction to, in her words, “Create space for radical wonder.” This image was made of the artist’s mother in Iceland and marks a turning point in Thomsen’s practice towards working with light and geometry.
Sonja Thomsen has been featured in exhibitions at the Bauhaus Archiv Berlin; Higher Pictures, NY; the Center for Photography at Woodstock; the DePaul Art Museum, Chicago; the Reykjavik Museum of Photography; the New Mexico Museum of Art; and the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art, among others. She was featured in the 2022-2023 MoCP exhibition Refracting Histories.
