Notes

An-My Lê (United States, b. 1960 Vietnam), Citrus Trees with Cross Pollination Shield, Fresno, California, 2019

An-My Lê makes photographs that question truth in photojournalism, politics, and place, often through depictions of war and its remnants. In this series, titled Silent General, she looks at the present moment in the United States to examine how (and if) the country has progressed since its founding, and the ways in which the past reverberates in present-day landscapes, symbols, and traditions. Lê created six photo essays—she calls them fragments—ranging from portraits of female border patrol officers in Texas to documentation of public statues in parks, to artificial movie and TV sets, and indicators of the climate crisis. Collectively, the series portrays the United States in a pivotal moment where it must reckon with the state of its national identity and shifting physical and cultural landscape.

An-My Lê holds a BAS (1981) and MS (1985) from Stanford University and an MFA from Yale University School of Art (1993). She is the recipient of a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation fellowship (1997). Her work is held in the collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; Museum of Modern Art, New York; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Bibliothèque Nationale, Paris; and Sackler Gallery, The Smithsonian, Washington DC, among many others. Her work was featured in the 2021 MoCP exhibition Much Unseen is Also Here, curated by Abigail Winograd.
