Giulia Grillo, or Petite Doll, is an Italian photo artist based in London. Her surrealist language is free from reason and it takes the photographic medium out of its conventional objective role. Combining surrealist art with the post-human, she transforms herself into distinct characters, building a bridge between art and the digital world. Each work carries a whole manifestation of an intricate concept, whipping from the unsettling to the cute, with the intent to mirror our contemporary society and its underlying fears and desires. Using a wide array of symbolic objects from elaborate sculptures to everyday things, she distorts and bends the idea of beauty, fusing it with a sense of the grotesque.

The Reflection of Yourself shows a woman holding a hand mirror but contrary to what we expect, the woman is the mirror and the mirror is the woman. Inspired by Magritte’s surrealism, the image crosses the borders of reality and inverts the norm, taking the mundane to a parallel universe. Through the paradoxical combination of surrealism and photography, the artist creates a dystopian scenario, raising questions about perception and identity.
