Notes
"My work explores the point at which painting and sculpture meet. Recent pieces are driven by my fascination in the beauty of the overlooked in our day-to-day lives. A series of recent wall-based works consider the ingenuity, engineering, and level of detail that often exist within single-use or disposable objects. In the works, I draw attention to these observations, creating permanent versions of plastic packaging or containers, preserving or reifying them through the process of casting.
A compulsion toward the collection, transformation or observation of the discarded; whether this be plastic, or abandoned street furniture, drives my practice. The inherent politics of materials, and their historic and contemporary use are also explored in the pieces. Through expanded field works, I reflect this interest in materiality and the question of desirability in the modern urban world.
The use of building materials such as concrete and plaster in the works is holistic in that their presence explores what they signify in a twenty first century context. In this sense, the wall-based concrete works attempt to merge the quotidian with the lofty, exploring painterly concerns as well as the capacity of some design movements and materials to permeate the lives and aesthetic experiences of us all." - Clare Holdstock, 2020
