It's My House!
09 OCTOBER 2022 - 31 OCTOBER 2022Notes
Los-Angeles based Brian Wills explores abstraction through the use of unconventional materials to create lush wall works steeped in a minimalist tradition. With an array of media such as dental floss, vinyl tape and poly thread, the work takes on a seemingly tactful feel as the artist painstakingly creates layered constructions that seem to be in constant flux. At the heart of the work is the artist’s interest in optics and the way the brain registers color, movement and spatial relationships.
Wills is a graduate of Denison and Harvard Universities. Wills’ work evokes experiential understandings of line, color, space, and object as he aligns his practice with minimalist abstraction, the subversive history of the monochrome, California Light & Space, and other art historical paradigmatic shifts.
Singular strands of thread are delicately wrapped around wooden substrates, creating surfaces that appear to vibrate and shift depending on available light, thread density, the architecture of the panel, and the motion of the viewer.
His work has been included in numerous exhibitions in the US and abroad. Recent shows include Swell Art 1950-2010, NY, Gallery Min Min in Tokyo, Themes and Variations at the Torrance Art Museum, Galerie Michael Janssen, Cologne, Made in California, Selected Works from the Frederick R. Weisman Foundation, Praz-Delavallade, Paris, Ochi Gallery, Los Angeles and Consequence at Museum 52 in London.
Wills' work is included in various public and private collections including The Jarl Mohn Family Foundation, Los Angeles, CA; Palm Springs Art Museum, Palm Springs, CA; The Estee Lauder Collection, New York, NY; and Fundación / Colección Jumex, Mexico City, Mexico.
