Notes
‘We The People of the Commonwealth’ is another beautiful print from Justine Smith’s ‘Money Map’ series (see Money Map of the World – China). This time the artist pulls together the different currencies of the Commonwealth into a dazzling display. The notes fan out in a colourful burst of decoration which celebrates not just the variety and identity of each nation, but the variety and beauty of each banknote.
The relationship we have with money is explored time and again in the artist’s work. She examines the power and influences the symbolic pieces of paper can have and our reliance on them. She explores international politics and financial conversations between states. Yet through all of this, she recognises them in their own right as beautiful works of art. Works of art we all yearn to collect.
Like her exploration of international currencies, Justine’s work has been exhibited in galleries and museums across the world. Most notably, her artworks are in The British Museum, The British Council, The British Library, and even the UK Government’s own art collection, in addition to numerous corporate and private collections.
