‘15.07.2017’ is a beautiful photograph from James Tarry’s Mind State Project series – a collection of landscape photographs the artist took to represent experiences with anxiety, depression and stress.
In this series, a circle encloses each scene, compressing the viewer’s gaze to imitate feelings of anxiety and depression. In some images, the circle encloses an isolated landscape that portrays the loneliness associated with these feelings. In others, like ’15.07.2017’, trees and objects in the centre symbolise the strength and determination to thrive, stand proud and strong against the encroaching surrounds and banish all negative feelings.
Here, James captures a disused concrete ‘sound mirror’ from Denge along the Kent coast. These sound mirrors were the forerunner to the radar system and used in the war to provide early warning of enemy aircraft and ships coming across the English Channel. With James, they become a concrete bastion against anxiety, stress and depression.
