Notes
World’s Aflame was painted from a screenshot of a video of a wild fire in the Amazon forest. I love to work from video stills as there is so much information in just one second and the image can sometimes include its own abstractions, such as blurring, sunspots, or bleaching which are far more interesting to me than a carefully curated photograph. If you look very carefully you can see the shadow of the helicopter from which the film was taken.
Claire Cansick paints landscapes of memories, environment and extreme weather events using transposed and recessive colours, made with a limited palette of four colours. She approaches difficult subjects with an eye on the natural and surprising beauty they can nonetheless hold. An active member of the Arborealists and ArtCan, Claire is currently painting a whole year of weather events stoked by climate change, as reported in the news and on social media, from her studio at home in Norfolk.
