Richard Whadcock is one of the UK’s leading atmospheric landscape painters. He studied on a general fine art course, including painting and printmaking, at Bristol Art College from 86-89. He went on to undertake a Masters Degree in Printmaking at the Royal College of Art from 89-91, working in intaglio and later in lithography.
The nature of lithography started to draw him back to painting. The printmaking process gave Whadcock a working structure which transposed onto his approach to painting, from the preparation of a painting surface to hand wiping etching plates to hand wiping the paintings themselves. The process involved paring the work down to the bare essentials while leaving enough for the image to evolve.
Elements of the great masters that have influenced Whadcock all have been introduced into his work. Echoes of Rembrandt's backgrounds allow the paintings to emerge from dark to light. Turner’s handling of atmosphere and the gestural nature of Twombly and Motherwell combine to make Whadcock’s paintings powerfully evocative.
Whadcock shows widely in the UK and the USA.
