Ceramics & Craft Studio Sale 2023 | Tilly Slight | Fifty Shapes of Clay (4/16)

Notes

Tilly Slight / Fifty Shapes of Clay

Tilly Slight showcases signature hand-thrown miniature ceramic sets made under the moniker Fifty Shapes of Clay, along with full size work. After being a member of Phoenix Pottery in Islington for many years, she began to experiment with how to make pottery possible at home during the covid UK national lockdown. Using a miniature pottery wheel she began honing her craft in miniature form. To fire the works, she tested an unusual miniature kiln, which works without having its own power source, and instead uses a kitchen microwave for energy. The kiln heats up exponentially when subject to microwave power, reaching temperatures of 1300 °C. Experiments with glazes followed swiftly from there: with no temperature gauge, each colour glaze requires a lot of testing to ensure the perfect result.

Since the lockdown was lifted, Tilly has also resumed her studio practice, making full scale unique homeware and sculpture, from a studio in Oval, London.

Her work is included in private collections in the UK, France, Australia and the USA, and in corporate collections in the UK. In 2021, she was commissioned to create 50 miniature vases for SSAW Collective's ‘Why Buy Roses in February’ campaign.
