Notes

“In my recent work I am interested in exploring the relationship we have with ourselves during our moments of pause and reflection as well as our relationship with others and our environments. I source original reference material from personal or borrowed archives and personal sketches, I allow for the nature of paint to guide the direction that the painting will take, following spontaneous decisions and mark making, embracing any mistakes and diversion from the original reference material or sketched idea. I am fascinated with the tension and relationship of colour and composition, merging representational and abstracted themes.” - Matt Macken, 2021
