About
Emma Harvey is an artist from London, currently based in Kent who makes paintings and lino prints that explore themes of female empowerment, body image and self-identity; her work is a very personal response to gender and female sexuality and her own understanding of body, femininity, and self.
Emma is currently working on her wooden tondos (circular paintings) where she is interested in the contrast between the use of religious icons and allegorical pictures in Renaissance tondos and contemporary kitsch circular artworks. A ritualistic theme runs throughout her work as she examines and reimagines her own experiences.
Emma’s recent works also include a series of larger scale oil and acrylic paintings, which feature the recurring theme of ribbons and the body, with large areas of flat paint contrasting against her more traditional oil painting style. Emma uses ribbons in referral to "taming, or attempt to tame her [woman], and the emancipation in reclaiming this act'. Emma is an artist with a growing reputation, she has exhibited both nationally and internationally, solo shows and group shows, and she has also curated and co-curated a number of shows as part of Cultivate, the London-based artist-run gallery she has co-run for that last thirteen years with Sean Worrall.
