About

Elfie Peppé (née Parry, 1905-1991) was an artist with a keen interest in wood engraving. She also happens to be the great aunt of Art on a Postcard’s founder, Gemma Peppé. Elfie was a student of the revered Eric Ravilious at Eastbourne Art School in the 1930s and a peer and great friend of Tirzah Garwood, who later became Ravilious’s wife. Elfie's son, Niel Peppé, has speculated whether there might have been some competition for Ravilious's attention between Elfie and Tirzah. Elfie was born into a time that prevented her from fully realizing her talent for painting and her other artistic pursuits due to societal expectations and lack of opportunities for women, but her artworks remain cherished by her family. Her wood engravings, which depict the stations of the cross after the artist H.B. Faulkner, are held in the Victoria and Albert Museum. Additionally, having exhibited annually with the Society of Wood Engravers, Elfie’s memory is further kept alive by her inclusion in the book "Spitsticks & Multiples: The History of the Society of Wood Engravers, 1920-46" by Simon Lawrence.
