Statement about AOAP Submitted Artwork
I started painting little still lifes of nitrous oxide bottles as a response to the vast amount littering the streets and parks recently. A lot of my work is concerned with furtive activity and unknowable stories in the city.
These versions are the first I’ve painted with watercolour. This seems fitting – N2O induces a short, quick high and the bottles are discarded without a thought - it makes sense that these paintings are executed quickly and there’s a breathless ecstasy to painting with watercolour; you only get one shot. Watercolour is also usually associated with muted, subdued subject matter so the problem of rendering hard edged, reflective surfaces is an interesting exercise for a painter.
They are life-size and each one is titled after the latitude and longitude that the bottle was found. These numbers can be put into a smart phone map and they will reveal where the bottle was discarded.
PLEASE DO NOT BID ON ARTWORK IN OUR ART ON A POSTCARD AUCTIONS IF YOU INTEND ON SELLING THE ARTWORK AFTER YOU HAVE PURCHASED IT. THIS AUCTION HAS BEEN ORGANISED FOR CHARITY AND ALL ARTWORKS HAVE BEEN GENEROUSLY DONATED BY THE ARTISTS TO RAISE MONEY FOR THE HEPATITIS C TRUST. WHEN THE WORK PRODUCED FOR THE CHARITY IS SOLD ON THE SECONDARY MARKET IT DAMAGES OUR RELATIONSHIP WITH THE ARTIST AND PREVENTS US FROM FUNDRAISING.
