About
Sona Asemani (b.1994) is an Iranian artist currently based in Rotterdam, NL. From her earliest childhood, the artist has been working with painting and drawing constantly, practicing mediums such as pastel, acrylic, pencil drawing, and oil by self-teaching. After her BA graduation in economics from ATU University in Tehran in 2017, she started to develop her professional career in painting and embroidery, and these practices quickly became her daily occupation. Since then, the focus of her art has been on storytelling, representing fictional characters, mainly a series of women's portraits inspired by her real dramatic experiences, social issues, and restrictions. The artist seeks women's freedom and promotes their sense of self-worth, as well as the power of being the backbone of a family, through these fragments of sharp colors and bizarre body shapes. From the beginning of October 2023, Asemani started her three-month residency program at Foundation B.A.d in Rotterdam, and She had her first solo show, " I Am Reborn," featured large-scale painting made during her residency as an end-of-residency presentation in early January 2024.

Statement about AOAP Submitted Artwork
I use colors as a means of expression. I am looking for contrasts by combining complementary colors in my paintings to create a powerful effect and to encourage women's natural beauty. I portray myself at different times and with fairy facial features; I have the same big eyes and thick eyebrows as my girls on the canvas. But they look way more confident and have solid body shapes, exactly how I frankly wish to be.
