About

Anna Choutova is a visual artist and curator working and studying in London. Anna is the founder and director of Bad Art Presents. She is the Associate Research Fellows at Slade School of Art. Anna’s practice is best described as a browse through a forgotten section of a Duty Free store. She fixates on items that glitter but ain’t gold, researching their societal significance, cultural connotations and nostalgic sense of security. She is fascinated by the things we consume in an effort to alter our identity.

Education

Anna studied Fine Art Painting at the University of Brighton (2012-2015) and completed her Painting MFA at Slade School of Art (2019-2022)

Statement about AOAP Submitted Artwork

Drawing 1 (Hair) A drawing about stimming, in this case hair brushing and hair touching. A moment capturing physical repetitive motions, bringing with it a sense of security, whilst slowly losing my locks. Drawing 2 (Cigarettes) A drawing about compulsion, in this case smoking. A family of cigarettes exists on an open plain... or maybe its a factory, in any case, it's something sturdy, industrious and positive. As an immigrant, cigarettes were always the quickest way for me to bridge my western and eastern upbringing, in one fell swoop a cultural identity was negotiated, I was hidden behind my literal smokescreen and felt safe. With my cigarettes paintings I examine the physical toll we accept and endure for a sense of society safety. Drawing 3 (Hotdogs) A drawing about Hot Dogs and a celebration of preserved foods. The art of pickling and fermentation was a means of survival for my ancestors, one that still reverberates in my generation. A jar remains to be a precious commodity, to dispose of one in my household is a catastrophic offence.
