Notes

About

Selena Scott is an emerging artist based in Cambridge, UK. She uses her work to navigate the Black identity through the lens of trauma, racism, and colonialism. Exploring themes such as afro-pessimism and prejudice, she references their direct connection to colonisation, utilising narrative to shed light on the Black experience. She allows the viewer to search for meaning, through symbols and loaded imagery, enabling interrogation and connection with the work. Empathy and sensitivity are at the core of her practice, using colour and light to convey emotional turmoil.

Statement about AOAP Submitted Artwork

Investigating memory and grief in relationship to identity, these postcards are reflections of my Caribbean heritage. The figures depicted are Bajans, ghosts of colonial history. They reference the lasting legacy of injustice and inequality on the island.
