11 SEPTEMBER 2023 - 27 SEPTEMBER 2023Notes
From an early age, Julia Bastian (1924-2019) led an active role in the Woman's Royal Navy Service (WRENS) after her beloved brother Peter was killed as a navigator in the Royal Air Force Bomber Command, during WWII. After her service she embarked on a long and distinguished career in journalism and publishing, working for 'The Times' and eventually becoming the first editor of a dedicated womens page on a major national newspaper. Julia had a celebrated artistic ability and made many paintings and drawings as part of Marylebone Art Club. Among her many commissions was a portrait of the Lord Mayor of London.
