Art for Ukraine
01 APRIL 2022 - 25 APRIL 2022Notes
“This is a painting of my father, made just before his 60th birthday. Cliched as it is to say he’s my best mate, as well as my unofficial studio assistant and oftentimes therapist – I absolutely would not be doing what I’m doing were it not for him. I very rarely – if ever – keep my own work; it’s a painting that means a lot to me and that I had intended to hold onto, but the money that could be raised from it would mean a lot more to the Ukrainian people it helps.” – Tom White
Tom White paints those who are closest to him, marking his works with an emotionality that transports the viewer into the interior of a private moment in time. His paintings allude to an ephemeral narrative; they invite a direct engagement with all elements of the depicted scene. Working on large scale canvases, White combines expressive, gestural marks with more refined areas of painterly precision. Working from his own photographs, he exploits the versatility of oil paint as a medium, balancing areas of thinly veiled brushwork with impasto marks to create an emphatic sense of mood and lighting.
Tom White (b.1995) obtained an MFA from Camberwell College of Arts. He was selected for London Grads Now. 21 at the Saatchi Gallery and has recently been part of a group show at the Grove Collective in London. White has exhibited widely throughout the UK and beyond. In September 2021, he completed a residency in France sponsored by Blue Shop Cottage.
