‘“Spring rites and other delights” is a painting from a body of work created whilst I was studying at the Royal Drawing School. The work refers to the fire jumping rituals and celebrations that take place on the first day of spring, and comes from a memory I have of one of such moments.’ – Melina Doumy
Melina Doumy’s practice involves painting from memory and observation, simultaneously incorporating imagery from Ancient Greek literature and archaeology. Interested in mythical narratives as metaphors for human nature, Doumy creates imaginative, dreamlike spaces inhabited by creatures shrouded in ambiguity.
Melina Doumy completed her studies in Fine Art at the Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design (2018) as well as the Royal Drawing School (2020). Doumy exhibited with the RSA New Contemporaries in 2018. She was awarded the RSA Landscape prize, the John Kiross Scholarship to Florence and the Sandra Macneillance Memorial Award for Painting and Drawing.
