01 APRIL 2022 - 25 APRIL 2022Notes
Embracing the female gaze, Elsa Rouy explores new ways of expressing semi-autobiographical and social narratives. Rouy is interested in female sexual expression and the imperfect self. Her work satirises immoral thoughts that can appear terrifying, shameful and guilt-inducing. She paints hedonistic, grotesque, even monstrous female figures with their sexual organs revealed. Rouy's artwork explores power relations within society. She appropriates the human body in order to discuss the nature of interpersonal relationships, often saturated with child-like dependency, intrusion, boundaries, or lack thereof.
Mothers Embrace relates to a recent series of paintings based on an introspective exploration and navigation of the self, using the body and its corporeal properties to express ideas centred around separation, sexuality and dependence. The present work draws from the intimate sacrificial relationship between mother and daughter.
