Art Auction - Arms Around the Child, Timed
24 OCTOBER 2022 - 13 NOVEMBER 2022Notes
Sami is originally from Sudan but was raised in Brazil. He came to the UK for his PhD and
was volunteering at a food hub in Hackney during the pandemic. I love how his apron flutters
in the wind, cape-like, momentarily capturing the superhero within. The photograph was
selected by the Duchess of Cambridge as one of the lead images for the ‘Hold Still’
exhibition and book, and has been acquired for the permanent collection of The National
Portrait Gallery and The Museum of London.
This photograph is part of a larger series documenting the volunteer support networks
in Hackney during the pandemic. Grey Hutton was awarded the National Geographic
Covid-19 Grant to continue this photographic work and it has been published and exhibited
widely, including on the Queen’s Christmas Broadcast in 2020 and the Piccadilly Lights.
Grey Hutton is a freelance photographer based in London. He studied photography at
London College of Communication before moving to Berlin, where from 2012 - 2018 he was
the photo editor and staff photographer of VICE Germany. His work has been published and
exhibited internationally, and he is a regular contributor to The Times and The Guardian.
