Notes
Tom Gidley explores the materiality of clay, surface and paint to create playful juxtapositions and unexpected relationships between objects. His works are visually abstract, but use titling to complicate the abstraction by suggesting possible forms. He exploits the materiality of clay, and our innate pareidolia to explore the way we read and make sense of the visual by way of language.
Tom Gidley was born in Birmingham and lives and works in London. Selected exhibitions include The Birmingham Show at Eastside Projects, Birmingham, 2015; A Point of Signification at Galerie Huit, Hong Kong, 2015; New Order II at Saatchi Gallery, London, 2014 and Selected By at Limoncello, London, 2014. Tom’s first novel Stunning Lofts was published by Metronome Press in 2005 and he has since completed his second novel. Gidley completed his BA Hons, Central St Martins, London in 1990 and an MA, Central St Martins, London in 1999.
This work was exhibited in New Order II: British Art Today by the Saatchi Gallery in 2014.
