A line in the sand: an artistic response in support of humanitarian efforts in Gaza (19/28)

Notes

About the artwork

In this work, three shadows standing in line symbolise the challenges of mass migration and the pursuit of social justice in a globalised world. The image reflects the paradox of unrestricted global flow of money and goods contrasted with the increasing barriers for people. The work prompts viewers to contemplate the regression in addressing social justice amidst global connectivity, turning the gaze back onto the observer, challenging us to consider our role in shaping future narratives.

About the artist

Sofia Hallström’s work broadly encompasses painting, sculpture and video, engaging with elements of autobiography, anthropology and history. Taking cues from migration, trauma and ecology, and led by a research-heavy approach, the work explores the human condition and how different times have sought to situate themselves in the world and order their existence by schematising the space around them. Since graduating in 2020 from Edinburgh College of Art, her work has been showcased at Kupfer, London; Good Weather, Chicago; Royal Scottish Academy, Edinburgh; CIRCA; The Groucho Club, London; Shrine, NYC; Unit 1 Gallery Workshop, London and The Nunnery, London. Recently, she has completed a residency with PM/AM Gallery, London and received an artist research grant at The Warburg Institute in London.
