17 JANUARY 2022 - 10 FEBRUARY 2022Notes
One of a series of 6 paintings made in 2021 titled The Stade I-VI. The full series can be seen here http://www.andrewhardyart.com/
The Stade in winter provided the raw material for these works. The Stade is a commercial fishing shingle beach located behind Hastings Contemporary Gallery in Hastings Old Town. It has been used for beaching boats for more than a thousand years and is now home to Europe's largest fleet of beach-launched fishing boats.
The paintings attempt to capture the stark contrast of rusting machinery and wet rotting wood against the vivid, brilliant colours and synthetic materiality of fishing floats, nets and safety equipment. Textures of corrosion, rust, dirt, wood rot and weather-worn plastic.
