Studio Sale 2023 | Tracey Elizabeth Downing
20 JANUARY 2023 - 10 FEBRUARY 2023Notes
Tracey Elizabeth Downing's colourful paintings lie between abstraction and representation, informed by memory, everyday objects and ephemera and the relationship between them.
“I am interested in visual metaphor and the relationship between physical ritual and visual noticing ; how paintings function as an embodied image, containing more than meets the eye, demanding an existential response from the individual. My process often begins with recording ‘noticings’ digitally then making drawings and studies from these, moving on to working on paintings that take on a life of their own, including reference to subconscious material that emerges during the process. Drawing is an important part of my practice more in an exploratory way than observational. I enjoy pairing back imagery to what feels important to keep in the work; in this sense my painting falls within the space between realism and abstraction”.
Tracey Elizabeth Downing graduated with a BA in Fine Art from Exeter College of Art in the 1980’s going on to train as an Art Psychotherapist she has a Masters from Goldsmiths UCL 2009-2012. Now mostly painting her Art Psychotherapy training still plays an important part in her creative process.
