Studio Sale 2023 | Hetty Douglas
20 JANUARY 2023 - 08 FEBRUARY 2023Notes
Hetty Douglas depicts the complexities of daily life based on observations of society and self. Behind the seemingly instinctive and accidental lines of her works are biographical traces that seek to discover the depths of her memories with gesture and imperfection.
Working predominately with the medium of painting, her art is coated by materials other than paint, including plaster and cement – drawing inspiration from urban degradation. These ideas culminate in layered canvases featuring raw, fortuitous and deliberate marks.
She relays buried feelings of confusion, hate, love and hope relating to pivotal moments in her life. Embedded within typographic suggestions, where she captures with just one word an atmosphere of hardship and melancholy, often through a delicately girlish, naïve and sexual twist.
Douglas’s work is a continuous exploration of herself, everything that she is, says, does, and lives, painted through empty planes full of emotions, with a penchant for suicide.
Hetty Douglas b. 1992 Sheffield, England. Now London based. Graduated from University of the Arts London in 2015.
The queer artist works predominantly in acrylic painting, but often using other materials to build depth and texture. Such as cement, polly filler, oil & ink.
Douglas recently completed her first solo show successfully at Gallery Steinsland Berliner in Stockholm. Prior to this Douglas has exhibited in a large number of group shows in London, New York, and Los Angeles. Douglas welcomes her upcoming second solo, post residency in Los Angeles, SAC 2023.
